Theresa Ann Akers of Eufaula passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, the 5th of March, 2023, surrounded by her family. She was born on the 22nd of April in 1954 to Alfred “Bus” and Ida Marie Montgomery. The family, consisting of ten siblings, resided west of Eufaula in McIntosh County.
Theresa married Thomas Frederick Akers on the 6th of November, 1970, and to this union a son was born, Timothy Shawn Akers, in May of 1971. She graduated from Eufaula High School in 1972.
Her husband Thomas owned and operated Sir Thomas’ Disco in the early 1980s, whilst Theresa was studying at Northeastern State University at Tahlequah. She earned a bachelor's degree in business education from that institution in the spring of 1985. Theresa also worked for Wal-Mart in Checotah for a time and State National Bank of Eufaula.
A second son, Trasen S. Akers, joined the family in June of 1985. Shortly thereafter, the family home was established on several acres west of the City of Eufaula on Southport Road.
Theresa worked for the State Farm Insurance agency of Eufaula before joining Eufaula Public Schools in 1992 as the principal’s secretary at Jefferson Davis Elementary. From there, she moved to the superintendent’s office of Eufaula Public Schools around 1994. Theresa began teaching computers at Houston Homan Junior High of Eufaula in 1999. This commenced her teaching career and in time she moved to Eufaula High School. There, Theresa was the advisor for the student council. Her teaching career culminated in being named Eufaula High School Teacher of the Year in 2016, before her retirement.
What Theresa enjoyed most was being a grandmother. Her only grandson, Chilly McIntosh Akers, was born in August of 2017. She was with him from the beginning, making regular trips to Oklahoma City to spend time with him and looked forward to his weekend visits in Eufaula.
Theresa is survived by her husband Thomas F. Akers of the home; her son Trasen S. Akers, daughter-in-law Aeriel R. Akers, and grandson Chilly M. Akers of Oklahoma City; her brothers Jim Montgomery of Eufaula and Keith Montgomery of Edmond; and her sisters Rena Blagrave of Midland, Marie Sellers of Eufaula, and Kathy Hall of Longtown.
Theresa was preceded in death by her son T. Shawn Akers; her parents Alfred “Bus” and Ida Montgomery; her brothers Harold and Woodrow Montgomery; and her sisters Trina Smithee and Joyce Gawf.
