Louis "Luke" K. Sharpe

October 14, 1944 — February 23, 2017

Louis "Luke" K. Sharpe was born on October 14, 1944 in Wichita Falls, Texas, the son Louis "Lou" K. Sharpe, of Checotah, OK, and Ruth Garnett Sharpe, of Altus, OK. He moved to Checotah in 1945 and attended school there through junior high. Luke attended high school at Shattuck School in Faribault, MN, where he graduated in 1962. In 1962, Luke attended Duke University in Durham, NC where he wrestled, played football, and joined Phi Delta Theta social fraternity. Frustrated with Duke athletics, he transferred to the University of Oklahoma to pursue his interest in wrestling. Luke had the privilege to be coached by Tommy Evans, Port Robertson, and many other talented Sooners, placing third at heavyweight in the 1966 NCAA Tournament. Turning to education, Luke earned a Master"s Degree in Accounting from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts in 1967. He began doctoral work at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas where he received a PhD in Marketing- Consumer Behavior in December 1970. Luke served on the faculties at the University of Utah and the University of Texas in Austin. He authored or co-authored twenty-one publications and one book from 1970 to 1974. In 1974, Luke joined Sharpe"s, the family clothing business based in Checotah. There he served many roles helping the stores expand to twenty-four locations in three states. He also helped establish Dentures and Dental Services, a group of full service dental clinics with forty locations in five states. Luke asks you to please shop Sharpe"s for apparel and DDS for dental care. Survivors include: his beloved wife, Holly; daughter, Shea Whitesell, of Edmond, OK; two sons: Louis K. "Kerry" Sharpe and wife, Julie James, of Benbrook, TX; Thomas A. Sharpe and wife, Jen, of Tulsa, OK; three grandchildren: Alex, Robert, and Thomas; and numerous extended family. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, March 5, 2017 at the Trinity Episcopal Church, 305 W. High St. Eufaula, OK 74432. Reception will follow at the Sharpe House Bed & Breakfast, 301 N.W. 2nd St., Checotah, OK 74426.
