Lawrence was born on March 16, 1929, in Eufaula, Oklahoma the son of James and Artie (Cox) Armstrong. He graduated from Eufaula High School. On August 12, 1949, Lawrence enlisted in the United States Army. He served during the Korean and Vietnam War. While serving, he received several medals including the Good Conduct Medal, M1 Rifle Sharpshooter, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, 2 Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart, the United Nations Korea Medal and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Lawrence served in the United States Army for over twenty-two years, before retiring and honorably discharged on July 31, 1972. On December 4, 1954 in Modesto, California, he married Anna Lou Knowles, who preceded him in death on August 5, 2008. They were happily married for over fifty-three years. Lawrence was a member and Past Post Commander of the Eufaula VFW Post 8798 and a 32nd Degree Mason of the Eufaula Masonic Lodge #1. Survivors include: sons: Stanley Armstrong, and Lawrence Boley; daughters: Brenda Berger, and Linda Harwell; brother, Leon Armstrong; ten grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Artie Armstrong; and sisters: Lorene Reed, Norma Hunter, Clara Mae Cox and his daughter, Sandra Hawkins.
