Houston Newton, 93, of Eufaula, passed away Friday, July 10, 2020, at the Jack C. Montgomery VA Hospital. Houston was born on January 13, 1927, in Eufaula, Oklahoma the son of Artie Lee and Willie (Jones) Newton. He attended Red Bud and Union Grove (Pull tight) schools. Houston enlisted in the United States Army on May 7, 1945. He started as a cook in the Army. When he didn't give an officer a meatball they sent him to be a military policeman. While serving in World War II, Houston received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Award, a Campaign Ribbon, the Army of Occupation Ribbon (Japan), the Victory Ribbon and 1 Overseas Service Bar. He was an Expert Carbine. Houston was honorably discharged on December 13, 1946. On May 25, 1948, he married Ella Dean Hammett in Fort Smith, Arkansas. They were happily married for seventy-two years. Houston had several jobs over the years. He worked as a derrick man in the oilfield, a carpenter and a farmer. Houston was a member of the Eufaula Church of Christ. Survivors include: his wife, Ella, of the home; his sons, Robert Newton and wife Lynn of Owasso, Larry Newton and wife Debbye of Eufaula; his daughter, Pam Bailey and husband Charlie; his brothers, Harold Newton and wife Katie of Stidham, J.W. Newton and wife Kathryn King of Eufaula and James "Bo Bo" Newton and wife Bonnie also of Eufaula; his sisters, Bonnie Barnett of Eufaula and Betty Eason of Wilburton; eleven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, a daughter-in-law, Susan Newton, brothers, Nathaniel, Leroy, Billy, a sister, Willie Fairchild and a great grandson, Tyson Kingfisher.
