David and I were sitting at home one evening, discussing his health issues and how he wanted his passing to be. So he wanted me to write it down as he told it to me. David Samuel Winters born May 2, 1955, in Ohio to Arthur and Bertha (Alfreds) winters. He is of the Lutheran faith. Always a private person and not wanting much of his private life known to everyone thus, I will respect his privacy. Raised in Detroit, Michigan, he fathered 3 sons, 1 daughter and was a grandfather to 22 grandchildren. One of 9 children, there were family difficulties and so, family ties were severed at an early age. After moving to Oklahoma in 2000, he fell to hard times, became homeless, jobless and had a drug addiction. He became acquainted with Nancy and her family through mutual friends. In 2007, he came to Eufaula looking for a fresh start. At that time, Nancy, his Guardian Angel and best friend, came to his rescue, and invited him to stay in her home with exceptions. She assisted him in kicking the drug habit, getting him medical help, and becoming his mentor. She taught him to read and write better, taught him to love things that come from the heart. He needed someone to care for him unconditionally, and that"s what Nancy did, just that. We became very close, inseparable and very happy. David was so happy, loving, and a caring person, knowing he finally found someone to fill the empty spaces in his life. In 2008, Nancy and David were married. He became step-father to LaNisa Kelley, California and Alfonzo Chiles III & wife Brandy of Eufaula and step-grandfather to 4 grandsons Joseph and Conner Myers and Kylar and Kaden Chiles. He loved to fish, watch the sunset on the lake, collect elephant figurines and had a special love for Native American Art and Tattoos. He was inspired by the artworks of Jon Tiger, which he got acquainted with and respected him highly as an artist. During his time, he worked as a roofer, carpenter, construction worker, assembly line worker, laborer and fork lift operator. His final job, before his illness, he worked for the City of Eufaula in Waste Water Management. He loved his job and everyone he worked with. David kept everyone on their toes!! When he attended church, Mt. Zion Church, Eufaula was his choice. He admired Re. Dwight Porter and his messages and the heavenly voices of the choir. David"s final wishes were to be cremated and to thank everyone for their acquaintance. A special thank you goes to Steve & Christine Ford, always and forever, friends to the end. Also a thank you goes to Sam Cowles, and employees of the Eufaula Casino. Not to forget Mayor Selina Dornan and the City of Eufaula Employees including his boss, Todd Warren and to Heartland Hospice and Kristie Yerkey for their care. A many, many thank you"s to Jon Tiger and the Eufaula Indian Community Staff and Members and to my wife, Nancy, for the care she solely provided and stayed by my side until death.
