Barbara Mae Hughes

December 19, 1933 — June 7, 2011

Barbara was born on December 19, 1933 in Rector, Arkansas to Vernon Voyce and Gertrude Ettamae (Floyd) Wagster. She and the family moved to Soledad, California in 1939. Barbara attended Gonzales High School, where she was active in basketball and received an athletic award in 1947. She graduated from Gonzales High School in 1951. She attended Hyland School of Nursing in Oakland, California from 1951-1953. On October 15, 1954, Barbara married Floyd Eugene Hughes, who preceded her in death in 2005. She worked as a secretary at various places. In 1961, they moved to King City, California. She and Floyd lived there seventeen years before moving to Lockwood, California in 1978. In 1993, they decided to move to Modesto, California. While in Modesto, she worked as a loan officer, where she received her salesperson license. After nine years there, they decided to move to Eufaula, Oklahoma. Barbara was a member of the Vivian Baptist Church. She received her Chaplain’s certificate in 2011. Survivors include: one son, Dennis Hughes, of Ripon, CA; two daughters, Lynette Mendoza, of Eufaula, OK; Rebecca Helzer, of Sonora, CA; one brother, Richard Wagster, of Prescott, AZ; one sister, Karen Johnson, of Squaw Valley, CA; ten grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Hughes; father, Vernon Wagster; mother, Gertrude Park; and one sister, Shirley Hedgecock.
